The Eastern Cape is a haven for 4×4 enthusiasts and we’ve decided to shortlist four routes that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Bedrogfontein 4×4 Route

The Bedrogfontein 4×4 Route in Kirkwood forms part of Addo and offers wonderful views of the Sundays River. At 45km, this trail is a fairly long one and can take a good six hours to complete. Look out for rock art along the way and brush up on local history to identify battle sites from the Anglo-Boer War. You’re in for a treat when it comes to the local fauna, as riverine thicket, afromontane forest and fynbos abounds. To make a weekend of it, stay at Kabouga Cottage or Addo’s Mvubu campsite.

Mountain Zebra National Park 4×4 trails

Just 12km from Cradock you’ll find the Mountain Zebra National Park – a beautiful place with three 4×4 routes that range in difficulty levels and lengths. The 14.2km Sonnenrust trail offers breathtaking views of Salpeterskop, while the 10km Juriesdam option goes through the Eastern plateau of the park. The 8km Umngeni trail is good for game watching and easy to complete. Try one or all of the routes and be sure to pack your camera to take some snaps of the experience.

Glenmore Farm 4×4 trails

Glenmore Farm is a scenic spot in the Groot River Valley of the Karoo, a mere 35km from Willowmore. The farm offers five 4×4 trails that expose you to the rugged, wild beauty of the area. The trails range from easy to moderate, and include rocky terrain, stream crossings and, sometimes, serious mud! You can stay overnight at the bush camp and wake up to the sound of the fish eagles that frequent the farm.

Gonjah 4×4 routes

Set among stunning indigenous forest, Gonjah Chalet in Patensie offers two 4×4 routes. One is a short 12km trek, while the more serious option is a 20km stretch that takes around five hours to complete. The drives take you through a wide range of bush flora and you can expect to spot some wildlife too. You’ll experience exciting climbs of up to 570 metres and daring dips into the valleys. There is a campsite available at Gonjah Chalet, so you can make a weekend of your trip to the Baviaanskloof region and try out both trails.
