Boosting Communal Sheep Production – agriorbit

Wool production has significantly improved in communal areas due to the increased focus by the National Wool Growers Association (NWGA). The NWGA provided intensive training and focused on genetic improvement of sheep flocks as well as the integration of these farmers into the formal wool value chain.

The Eastern Cape holds great potential for agricultural development for wool production, despite the high poverty. Modern shearing sheds with the necessary infrastructure are necessary for communal farmers to serve agricultural and community purposes. To ensure effective farmer development in communal areas there needs to be a strong public-private partnership for example, state provided financing or industry organisations such as the NWGA to execute the implementation.
