Mohair South Africa

The South African Mohair Industry

South Africa is the global leader in mohair production, contributing over 50% of the world’s supply of this luxurious natural fibre. Renowned for its exceptional quality, South African mohair is sought after by premier designers and textile manufacturers worldwide.

The journey of mohair in South Africa began in 1838 through an inadvertent gift from the Sultan of Turkey: 12 infertile Angora rams and one pregnant ewe. The birth of a kid during the voyage established the foundation of South Africa’s Angora goat population. These resilient animals flourished in the Karoo region of the Eastern Cape, where the unique climate and grazing conditions proved ideal for mohair production.

Today, the Eastern Cape remains the heart of the nation’s mohair industry. South African mohair is celebrated globally for its distinctive characteristics, including its lustrous sheen, remarkable resilience, and superior dye affinity. At the core of this flourishing sector is Mohair South Africa (MSA) the collective voice of this industry, we advocate for farmers, connect the farm-to-fashion supply chain, and uphold mohair’s international reputation as a rare and luxurious fibre. By fostering innovation, education and collaboration, we promote both economic and ecological sustainability through regenerative farming practices, uniting all stakeholders to drive growth and value creation across the supply chain. Guided by integrity, community and heritage, we form strategic global alliances to ensure a thriving, resilient and globally respected mohair industry for future generations.
