Agri Eastern Cape met with different role-players today to understand the current delay in the shipment of live animals to the Middle East. As of now, we can confirm that the ship carrying the live animals has not yet departed. The loading process at the Al Mawashi feedlot has been delayed due to unwarranted interference by the NSPCA. This has also led to the arrest of the feedlot manager on allegations of defeating the ends of justice.
While we understand the NSPCA’s mandate to protect animal rights, we, as outside observers, cannot help but express concerns about the potential disruptions caused and the negative impact that this has on animal welfare.
At this stage, we have been informed that the National Prosecuting Authority is yet to make a decision on whether to proceed with the charges, laid by the NSPCA. We acknowledge the importance of addressing animal welfare concerns, but these unwarranted and malicious attempts by the NSPCA are not necessary.
Furthermore, we have noted on the NSPCA's Facebook page that they are complaining of exhaustion from the extended time they have to spend at the feedlot. This situation is entirely of their own making! As Agri Eastern Cape, we firmly believe that the final say on the suitability of animals for loading should rest with the State Veterinarian in charge and not with the NSPCA.
Moving forward, Agri Eastern Cape remains committed to engaging with Industry Stakeholders and Government to ensure that live animal exports, which are crucial for sustainable economic growth in our province, continue without undue interference.
We firmly believe that the NSPCA's efforts could be better directed towards addressing real animal welfare issues while allowing emerging and commercial farmers to export under the agreed protocols.
